ATM UI Accessibility & Inclusion Initiative
Challenge
After the initial MVP launch of the ATM app, one of the design team’s long term goals was to create a more inclusive and accessible product.
Solution
The design team focused on updating the mobile app colors to be friendlier to colorblind users and for low-vision users. In addition, the illustrations used for the Add Data section were updated to reflect more diverse populations.
Individual Contribution
I led the research into WCAG color contrast accessibility and strategy for diversity and inclusion for the app. This included proposing changes to the colors being used within the app that would meet minimum AA contrast requirements for text and icons in addition to testing colors to ensure that people with various degrees of color blindness would still be able to enjoy and use the app as expected.
Under my guidance, the Senior Visual Designer created artwork and guidelines for illustrations that represented diverse members of the population and challenged many stereotypes regarding gender roles, family structure, and more.
I created a design guide to help educate other members of the design team about tools that could be used to test for WCAG contrast requirements, colorblindness, and general accessibility tips.
